In a constantly changing educational environment, the school library media specialist must be aware and engaged in personal change to meet the challenges of that changing environment, and to assist school staff as they meet the challenges as well. School library media specialists are uniquely qualified to meet this standard. With most states requiring a master’s degree for entry-level certification, school library media specialists enter the field with strong academic qualifications, perhaps more than any other school staff member except for the principal.

It is expected that school library media specialists plan and implement strategies for their own professional growth. They take courses and workshops, attend conferences, read professional journals, and actively engage in the communities of practice for school library media specialists. 8 Others are face-to-face, such as committee work and district or regional meetings. School library media specialists also work for the professional growth needs of others in the school community. They attempt to discern those needs by observation and analysis, by conversation and listening to others.

The integration is best achieved in collaboration with the school community; the collaboration is itself a hallmark of school library media best practice.
